In association with ‘Solidarity: The Dockers of Dublin Port’, the Little Museum of Dublin and Dublin Port Company present ‘An Evening of Dock Work’.
This event explores the history and legacy of dock work in Dublin Port with firsthand accounts from members of the Dublin Dock Workers Preservation Society, many of whom are retired dock workers or family members of dock workers. Dr Aileen O’Carroll, co-author of The Dublin Docker: Working Lives of Dublin’s Deep-Sea Port (2017), the first academic monograph dedicated to dock work in Dublin, will act as chair during this intimate event, which promises to be full of stories that speak to the hardship, humour and resiliency of dock work.
The connections between dockland communities, such as Sheriff St, Ringsend and East Wall, and the port will be explored. So, too, will the nature of dock work, from the process of obtaining work at a ‘read’ to the types of commodities handled to the effects containerisation had on the dock workers’ way of life. Colourful characters and stories will be in abundance. Doors open at 6:30 pm. The event will start at 7 pm sharp and last approximately 1.5 hours.
