We are excited to be a part of this year’s Dublin Festival of History! Join us for a series of insightful talks and walking tours that delve into Dublin Port’s rich heritage and its role in the city’s history. Here’s what’s in store:
Talk Series – The Substation
- History Ireland Hedge School: “Is Irish History ‘Sea Blind’?”
Date: Sunday, September 29th
Time: 3 pm – 5 pm
Join History Ireland’s Hedge School panel as they debate whether Irish history has overlooked its maritime past. Explore how the sea has shaped Ireland’s history, from trade and migration to cultural exchanges and conflict.

Architect Grainne Shaffrey will explore the evolution of Dublin Port’s landscape, highlighting efforts to balance urban development with preservation. Learn about the transformation of the port area and its impact on Dublin’s urban landscape.

David Dickson (TCD Fellow Emeritus) will discuss maritime trade and port infrastructure influenced Dublin’s response to widespread starvation, emigration, and social upheaval, shaping the city’s history and resilience during these critical periods.
