Environmental Management

Introduction

Dublin Port operates and maintains an Environmental Management System (EMS) to minimise our environmental footprint while achieving sustainable operations. The purpose of our EMS is to establish a structured approach to managing and reducing the environmental impact of Dublin Ports operations. The system is designed to ensure compliance with environmental regulations, promote the efficient use of resources, and continually improve our environmental performance.

Dublin Ports EMS is externally reviewed and certified by the EcoPorts network following the framework outlined in the Port Environmental Review System (PERS) standard. Certification to the PERS system ensures that environmental matters specific to port operations are considered in all of Dublin Ports operations.

Objectives

Dublin Ports key objectives include:

  • Minimising Pollution: Implementing measures to reduce air, water, and soil pollution from port activities.
  • Resource Conservation: Promoting the sustainable use of natural resources, including water and materials.
  • Waste Management: Implementing effective waste management practices to reduce, reuse, and recycle materials.
  • Biodiversity Protection: Protecting and enhancing local biodiversity and marine ecosystems.
  • Energy Efficiency: Enhancing energy efficiency across all operations and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Internationally Recognised Standards

Our EMS is based on internationally recognised standards and comprises several critical components:

  • Environmental Policy: A comprehensive policy statement outlining our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
  • Planning: Identification of environmental aspects, legal requirements, and objectives and targets for improvement.
  • Implementation and Operation: Development of programs and procedures to meet our environmental objectives and ensure compliance.
  • Monitoring and Measurement: Regular monitoring, measurement, and reporting of environmental performance indicators.
  • Auditing and Review: Periodic internal audits and management reviews to assess the effectiveness of the EMS and identify areas for improvement.
  • Training and Awareness: Ongoing training programs to enhance environmental awareness and competency among port staff and stakeholders.

Dublin Port regularly engage with its stakeholders including employees, customers, regulatory bodies, and the local community, to ensure transparency, accountability, and collaboration in our environmental efforts.
